Federal Prosecutors Tie Rozier to $100K Betting Bribery Scheme
Federal prosecutors filed new charges against former NBA player Terry Rozier on 28 May. They allege he accepted a $100,000 payment to leave a Charlotte Hornets game early in 2023. Prosecutors say bettors then placed more than $250,000 in player prop wagers after receiving information about his planned exit from the game.
Prosecutors say Rozier planned to leave a March 2023 game against the New Orleans Pelicans because of a leg injury. They allege bettors knew about it before the game and placed wagers on him finishing below sportsbook lines. Rozier played just over nine minutes before leaving the game, and most of those bets won.
The government alleges Rozier was promised $100,000 for his role in the scheme, although the payment was later reduced to about $70,000 after some wagers were lost. The new charges also broaden the case beyond sportsbooks by naming the NBA and the Charlotte Hornets as alleged victims.
Rozier has denied the allegations and pleaded not guilty to earlier conspiracy and money laundering charges. His attorney said the new indictment reflects prosecutors pursuing additional legal arguments rather than introducing new evidence.
For operators, the case puts player prop betting back in focus. Prosecutors allege bettors received information about a player’s availability before sportsbooks could react. A single piece of information can affect an entire prop market. The case is likely to increase attention on how sportsbooks monitor betting activity and handle information linked to injuries and playing time.
TGJ Take
The amount at the centre of this case is small compared to the size of the US betting market. The bigger issue is that prosecutors allege bettors gained an edge from information that sportsbooks did not have. That is a risk that exists in every player prop market. Operators should pay close attention to the outcome of this case, as it could increase pressure for tighter monitoring of injury news, betting patterns, and account activity linked to prop bets.
