Vectiq Buys PlayCanada.com as Alberta iGaming Opens
Vectiq Inc. has acquired PlayCanada.com from Catena Media US, Inc. The deal comes days after Alberta opened regulated online gambling to private operators on 13 July 2026. It adds a national Canadian affiliate brand to Vectiq’s portfolio.
Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed in the announcement. Vectiq said the purchase gives it an established Canadian media asset with coverage across casino, sports betting, poker and slots.
PlayCanada.com’s website has operated since 2000 and publishes content that covers Canada’s main provincial gambling markets, such as Ontario and Alberta. Vectiq plans to use the site to generate player acquisitions for licensed operators through editorial content, organic search, paid media, free-to-play mechanics and customer relationship management.
Pablo Ferreira, CEO of Vectiq, said Alberta’s opening would increase demand for gambling information tailored to provincial rules. “Alberta’s regulated market will create an enormous demand for credible, province-literate guidance for players, and PlayCanada.com’s editorial depth and national footprint put us in an exceptional position to meet it,” Ferreira said.
Catena Media Frames Deal as Part of Partner Strategy
Pierre Cadena, Chief Operating Officer of Catena Media, described the sale as part of the company’s approach to back strong partners and grow value in their markets. He called the deal “our MRKTPLAYS+ strategy in action.” Cadena added that Canada remains an important market for Catena Media, and that Vectiq’s Canadian presence made it well placed to expand PlayCanada.com as Alberta’s regulated sector develops.
The transaction gives Vectiq a second named Canadian affiliate asset. Its portfolio also includes MaxSpinz.com, a site focused on Ontario casino and sweepstakes reviews.
Vectiq said PlayCanada.com will serve as a central asset in its Alberta strategy. The site already carries Alberta-focused gambling guides and retail casino coverage. That gives the company an existing search presence and a recognised brand name as licensed private operators enter the province.
By contrast, Ontario was Canada’s first province to introduce an open regulated online gambling model that involved private operators. Vectiq is betting that Alberta will create a similar commercial opening for affiliates able to produce local regulatory content and direct users toward licensed brands.
💡TGJ Take
The timing matters more than the size of the deal. Alberta’s launch creates a short window in which established Canadian websites can secure search rankings and operator deals before competition increases. The PlayCanada.com purchase gives Vectiq an immediate audience and years of website history, rather than a build from zero. Affiliates that target Alberta should expect acquisition costs and competition for operator deals to rise as more established groups enter the province.
