Korea Casino Recovery Turns Tourist Growth Into Revenue Lift

Paradise, Lotte Tour Development, and Grand Korea Leisure reported combined casino net sales of KRW334.1 billion for January and February, up 27% year on year, while combined drop moved past KRW2.19 trillion.

The growth showed up across all major operators, not just one. Lotte Tour Development recorded the fastest increase, with casino sales up 50.4% to KRW78.2bn and drop up 43.3% to KRW434.5bn. Paradise stayed the largest contributor, bringing in KRW181.2bn in the first two months, up 26.1% year-on-year. GKL added KRW74.7bn, up 11.8%.

Jeju Dream Tower recorded 96,966 casino visitors across January and February, up 40.6% year on year. Paradise’s Jeju Grand Casino also reported growth over the same stretch. The effect of visa policy and flight capacity is becoming easier to see in monthly casino numbers, especially after Korea’s visa-free measures for Chinese group tourists gave travel demand another lift.

Chinese arrivals to Korea in January reached 418,703, while Japanese arrivals came to 225,351, both ahead of January 2019 levels. That points to a stronger base of regular tourist traffic, not just a rebound in premium demand. For casino operators, that changes the revenue equation. A business built on broader tourist volumes can be steadier, but it also depends more on hotel occupancy, retail traffic, floor layout, and conversion on-site.

TGJ Take

More tourists are driving casino revenue up, but the key point is how operators use that traffic. A broader mix of Chinese and Japanese visitors reduces reliance on VIP play and gives a more stable base, but it also raises expectations. For operators, this is now a conversion test. More footfall alone is not enough. The focus shifts to turning visits into longer stays, higher hotel occupancy, and more spend across the property. Those that do that will build stronger revenue, while others will only see short-term gains from higher traffic.
